Forum: forums Subject: Is the move from "www.archive.org" to "archive.org" final?

Hello!

I've noticed that recently you've got rid of the "www." sub-domain (that is, there's a "302" browser redirect for addresses containing "www.").

My question is: was it an intentional action? Can we assume it's going to stay this way (without "www.") for the foreseeable future?

Let me give some background:

I'm the author of Tiger, a certain browser extension that makes browsing Archive.Org a joy. This extension had recognized "www.archive.org" till now, but since this sub-domain is effectively gone, the extension no longer works. Of course, I can fix the extension, but its users will have to carry out some very technical steps to migrate their database as well (browsers associate databases with distinct sub-domains) and I want some reassurances that the "www." removal wasn't some arbitrary move that could be canceled at some time.

Yes that was me and yes we intend to make it permanent.
Sorry for any minor breakage we inadvertently caused!

(we were motivated since a new service will come up public some months from now that will likely put a lot more urls "out there" on the web to us... )

Thanks for the prompt response!

I fixed my Tiger extension.

Here are a few screenshots to encourage people to try it out (click to enlarge):

Use colorful "stones" to keep tabs on individual radio episodes:

See Tiger's homepage for many more screenshots.

There's also a tool to convert your existing Archive.Org bookmarks to tags.
